3D in Medicine,
3D is applied to medicine to help for the structure of a patients bone or other body part/organ. They would first take a x-ray then get a employee who specializes in this field would make the model so they can get a better look at what is wrong with the patient.
The very first game to be released in 3D was 3D Monster Maze. 3D Monster Maze was the first ever game released on a commercial games machine that was in 3D. It was developed by Malcolm Evans in 1981 for the Sinclair ZX81 platform. The player is awarded with points for every step you make without the enemy, the Tyranosaurus, catching up with you. The level is a 16 x 16 maze that is randomly generated every couple of seconds.
Transition to 3D,
The fifth generation is most noted for the rise of fully 3D games. It started off with the games most people have heard of like Super Mario 64 which was playable on the N64, Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation One as well as Spyro which was also on the PS1. These games set the trend of 3D games with their 3D environments appealed to the gamer's and stole peoples attention from the side-scroller genre of video games. Another reason gamer's started to love these 3D games are because of they offered more complex gameplay and more creative genres. Video games where usually created and distributed to the public via video game cartridges but due to the amount of storage needed to create these games video game developers started to use compact-disc's for the public to play these new games.

3D in TV and Films,
3D is used in TV and Film a lot but its used most in animated shows and films. One TV Show that uses 3D models is Family Guy. Family Guy was first aired on 31st January 1999. This show is completely computer generated (CG). Everything you see in this show, characters, environment and other surround object is made digitally.
3D models are used in the architectural field to get a base plan for a building/structure before the build actually goes to do the labor of making it by hand. The builder can also use these models as a reference to get a understanding of time, whether they are on schedule or if they are behind.
The application of 3D is used in Product Design to create a prototype of your product to then be presented to stakeholders or other form of investors. It's also a good way to get an idea of how the product is going to function/look.
In Engineering 3D is used to created different components to machinery. It would be mainly be used to see how these components work together before actually making the object(s). For example, if you had a water heater and you needed to set up piping you would make a model to have a general idea of how this setup will do.
